Robert Rutherford loves Denver, and he’s heartbroken that life’s vagaries are now sending him off toward new beginnings in San Diego. But the co-host (with founder Andrew Orvedahl) of the monthly storytelling project and podcast The Narrators is looking at his move as an opportunity to expand the concept westward, once he’s found his footing in Southern California. It goes without saying that tonight’s special edition of the Narrators, Rutherford’s last show as a Denver resident, is going to be a blowout.
“We’re partnering with Pivot TV, which mostly focuses on documentaries and social-justice issues, and they’re coming out to film the show,” Rutherford says. “They approached us about filming a show on the theme of ‘Taking a Stand.’” Rutherford and Orvedahl loved the idea and began rounding up some of their favorite local Narrators contributors, including Flobot Jonny 5, Buntport performer and Warm Cookies of the Revolution founder Evan Weissman, and comedian Nancy Norton, to perform for the cameras. And to top off the slate, they invited Minneapolis performance artist Dessa to return for a repeat Narrators performance. The last time she performed, Rutherford recalls, “she blew everyone away. We’ve been looking for a reason to bring her back.”
Join the filming, fun and intimate truth-telling at 8 p.m. at Buntport Theater, 717 Lipan Street; admission is free, but a $3 donation is being requested at the door to help support the performers. Visit thenarratorspodcast.com for details and to listen to past Narrators podcasts.
