Beer Nation

California’s Sierra Nevada Brewing, the nation’s second-largest craft-beer maker, is nearing completion of a second production facility, this one near Asheville, North Carolina. To celebrate, company founder Ken Grossman wanted to turn the spotlight on the craft-brewing industry as a whole rather than on Sierra Nevada itself. With that in mind, the brewery has launched a three-week, seven-city road-tripping festival called Beer Camp Across America, which stops in Civic Center Park tonight.

“This is an important milestone for us, but Ken wanted to point out that we wouldn’t have had the chance to build this second brewery if all of the other breweries in the country hadn’t helped build momentum for craft beer,” says Sierra Nevada spokesman Ryan Arnold. So the company invited every craft brewery in the nation — nearly 3,000 of them — to participate in these regional celebrations. More than 100 breweries will join the party in Denver, about eighty of them from Colorado. Sierra Nevada is also releasing a twelve-pack of beers that were made with twelve other breweries, including Longmont’s Oskar Blues; it will be for sale in local liquor stores this week, and the beers will be at the festival as well.
