Shawn Gascoyne-Bowman is an outlaw crafter, a rebel with the simple cause of bringing handmade joy to as many people as possible. Hence her blog (and book) Criminal Crafts, which offers dozens of crafts for the outlaw in you. Her newest book, Beer Crafts: Making the Most of Your Cans, Bottle Caps, and Labels, is a member of the same family.
“I’ll craft with anything, but beer is such a great resource,” she says. “Aluminum is super-easy to use; I have a lot of it around, and it was not hard to come up with forty designs.” The crafts run the gamut from kitschy ’70s-style folk art to more modern stylings — and, Gascoyne-Bowman points out, making crafts and drinking beer go hand in hand.
“With a lot of crafting, you’ve got these enormous supplies that aren’t very portable,” she notes. “But I’ll just go out with some girlfriends to a brewery and try different beers we haven’t tried before.”

She’s especially excited to be stopping at the Tattered Cover, 2526 East Colfax Avenue, tonight at 7:30 p.m. to sign Beer Crafts: She grew up taking acting classes at the Bonfils Theatre and remembers when the book-signing area was the old improv club space.
