Boulder's Green Streets gets rolling with salsa fundraiser tonight
Bikers rule the street at the 2102 Boulder Green Streets Ciclovìa.
Bikes are taken seriously in Denver and Boulder, and just as Denver's Viva Streets! drew thousands of pedalers to West 23rd Avenue for a day of open, traffic-free riding and strolling in August, the Boulder Green Streets Ciclovìa in Boulder did much the same a month later in an area comprising three miles of city streets. The idea of the Ciclovìa originated in Bogotá, Columbia, where the annual event closes more than seventy miles of roadway to cars.
Now Green Streets is planning next year's expanding wheel fete, and to get things rolling, the organization is throwing a holiday bash/fundraiser at Shine. It all starts at 5 p.m. with an outdoorsy, bike-centric silent auction; a free Latin dance class follows at 7 p.m., and at 8 p.m., Orquestra La Brava will give folks a chance to try out their moves to live "hard" salsa music, in a nod to the ciclovía's Latin roots.
Admission is $8, and proceeds will help fund free community programming at the event scheduled for next September 15. For more information, visit Boulder Green Streets online.
