What could a fresh coat of paint, live music and a comfortable place to enjoy a meal outdoors do for a block in your neighborhood? The second annual Better Block project -- this year focusing generally on Five Points, and specifically on 24th Street between California and Welton -- aims to answer that question by providing a one-day mini-makeover of a city block that also includes dance performances, food vendors, gardening demonstrations, walking tours and more.

Last year's edition centered on economic development and visually creating templates for budding business investment. This time around, Better Block is looking at green space. "We're more focused on activating a park -- access to recreation and access to healthy food and kind of demonstrating how pedestrian and environmental improvements in general can impact the community," says Gosia Kung, director of WalkDenver, the organization behind the project. Better Block Five Points is free and runs today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. along 24th Street. For more information, visit betterblockfivepoints.com.
