Five hidden Denver art galleries to visit this weekend

While most art galleries in town do all they can to promote themselves, some of them provide back room spaces, which are not advertised as often and usually feature the work of up-and-coming or associate-member work. This weekend is closing weekend for many shows, as galleries gear up for next week's First Friday openings, which makes it a perfect time to peruse art without the crowds. Here's a list of hidden galleries to visit.

"Associate Space," Pirate: Contemporary Art

Where it is:

3655 Navajo Street, by Zip 37 and EDGE galleries.

What it is: Pirate has a reputation for showing edgy, experimental artwork. A mainstay of Denver for thirty years, and one of the surviving co-ops from the "old art district," Pirate helped create the art scene in Denver. It still does that by offering associate members the chance to show in this lesser-known space.

Showing now:

Associate member Jason Theel's work shows through May 27.

"CHAC Norte," Chicano Humanities and Arts Council

Where it is:

772 Santa Fe Drive, by Kanon Collective and Space Gallery.

What it is:

The Chicano Humanities and Arts Council (CHAC) is dedicated to celebrating Chicano and Latino culture through visual and performing arts. The organization has a lot of members, though, because it takes anyone who wants to show in the gallery. So CHAC Norte provides another space, aside from the main CHAC gallery, in which to explore the cultural complexities of Chicano art.

Showing now:

CHAC Norte is featuring art from Michael Penny, Robert Maestas, Joe N. Martinez, Bob Martinez and Suzanna Martino.

"The Annex," part of Core New Art Space

Where it is:

900 Santa Fe Drive, next to Spark and Core New Art Space.

What it is:

For newcomers, the Core/Spark duality is pretty exciting ("Hey, I'm in another gallery and I didn't have to walk outside"). But there is yet a third layer here: The Annex. Way in the back, "The Annex" offers a different show every month.

Showing now:

Johnny Nicoloro's "Visions of the Virgin," a delve into the many manifestations, from spiritual to commercial, of Mary. Shows through May 27.

"Modern Love 6," by Kym Bloom

"The Back Room," part of Zip 37

Where it is:

3644 Navajo Street, next to Pirate, Edge and Next Galleries

What it is:

As a co-op, Zip 37 features a couple of member artist's work each month. But if you walk past the front room, into the back, you get a chance to see a small-scale selection, featuring almost every artist. Zip's Back Room is packed with colorful, multimedia art that's funky and affordable. The art is so dense in the Back Room, in fact, that it takes a substantial amount of time to look through everything.

Showing now:

A little bit of everything, including art from Valerie Savarie, Katie Hoffman, Leo Franco, Kym Bloom, and Zoa Ace.

"Associate Space," part of EDGE Gallery

Where it is:

3658 Navajo Street, next to Zip 37 and Next galleries.

What it is:

EDGE's associate space somehow seems extra hidden. It's tucked in the back of the gallery, through a narrow doorway. The timbre of the associate space starkly juxtaposes the atmosphere in the front: instead of bright walls lighted by big windows, the room seems yellowed in back room light and very intimate. Finding the space, and finding it alone connects the viewer closely to the often experimental art.

Showing now:

Starting May 25, and running through June 17, associate artist Jane Davis will be showing her work.
