Chevy Ray Johnston's Flee Buster is one of the most addictive games we've ever touched. Which is saying quite a bit considering it was built for Ludom Dare 21, a 48-hour game design contest in which it also took one of the top prizes over nearly 600 other entries. It's beauty comes in its simplicity; with just the arrow keys at your disposal, you'll be kicking through three different games at once.
Not exactly at once, but each of the three games has a seven-second timer on it, and it cycles from game to game as you go along. If that sounds aggravating and complicated, you're be right, but it somehow still manages to be simple to play and easy to pick up.
The three games vary in control, the first in the cycle is a straight-forward platformer where you run to the right and jump, the second is a space shooter, where you can fly in any direction, and the final game is a weird frog jumping game where you jump up platforms.
The goal of each section and the game as a whole is to capture 130 tokens. Since the games cycle around every seven seconds, you also have to master each one and be ready to pick up the next immediately. When a game cycles, it saves your state and when you return to it, you're in the exact same spot you were in last time. Meaning, if you were jumping to your death as the game cycled over, when it returns, you'll still be jumping to your death.
The theme of Ludom Dare 21 was "escape," so, while you're running around and juggling each of these games, you'll also have something chasing you, either monster, a UFO or some spikes.
You wouldn't think this would be enough to capture your attention, but there is nothing that eats away at a day more than a simple game with a "one more try" mentality. Flee Buster captures that and almost forces your hand into hitting "enter" just one more time.
