The Chicano Humanities and Arts Council gave 350 blank wooden hearts to local artists and non-artist community members with a flair for design, and asked them to create individual pieces of art for their silent auction tonight. The project illustrates an exploration into creativity, says director Crystal O'Brien. "It's exciting to see what people can do with a basic heart. Sometimes I don't even recognize it; I have to look for the heart. One artist gave us a heart that has faces coming out from it, and the actual heart is underneath."

The silent auction will also include donated services from local businesses; it benefits CHAC programs. Despite the convenient timing, the theme isn't Valentine's Day, says O'Brien; in fact, artists are encouraged not to make the heart a valentine. "Milagros del Corazon, or Miracles of the Heart, is the title because we are a tiny organization but we run so many programs: three after-school clubs a week, and we serve 40,000 kids a year," she says. "This fundraiser helps support our programs, so these hearts are the miracles of our organization."

The auction runs today from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Space Gallery, 765 Santa Fe Drive. For tickets, $10 to $15, and more information, call 303-571-0440 or visit www.chacweb.org.
