Variety is the name of the game in the Denver art scene this weekend: You can choose to take art seriously, view it with a light heart or stroll and browse through an outdoor art market where the collecting is easy. Here are a few new shows and events to take in.

Gildar Gallery

now what
Gildar Gallery
Through July 19

Gildar Gallery takes on the 2015 Biennial of the Americas theme of Now! in now what, an international group exhibition guest-curated by Brett W. Schultz, co-director of Yautepec Gallery and Material Art Fair in Mexico City. “Originally, this was a show about uh-oh,” Schultz says in his statement. “But, at the end, it’s probably much more about meh. If the present moment – now – perpetually rings of hope, outrage, exhilaration, fear, sweaty anticipation and/or collective hysteria, then this show is the moment that immediately follows, when now fails to meet the future scripted for it. The let-down, the bounce-back. Situation Normal: All Fucked Up.” Go take a look and come to your own conclusions; the show is up through the Biennial opening week in July.

Yggdrasil
Love Gallery
June 12 through July 3
Opening reception: 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, June 12

Love Gallery presents a sister act with the two-person show Yggdrasil, which features illustrations by Sarah Michaels and cheeky soft sculptures by Carolyn Michaels. In an interview posted on the gallery’s website, Carolyn says this of her felt creations: “Wool is an incredibly forgiving material, so as I start making my base shapes, I’m often inspired by my mistakes. The more my work seems to drift from my initial concept, the more inspired and excited I seem to get. I can often fix a mistake easily or roll with it and adapt the rest of my piece to fit it. It’s all very spontaneous, and that’s why it continues to drive me to do new, stranger things.”

Ansel Adams: Masterworks
Foothills Art Center
June 12 through August 30
Opening reception: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 12

The works of Ansel Adams, who photographed landscapes and nature’s perfect moments in starkly contrasted black-and-white, are seen everywhere, ingrained into the American cultural consciousness. But there’s no better way to see them than in person, and that opportunity strikes this week at the Foothills Art Center in Golden, when the touring show Ansel Adams: Masterworks opens for a summer run, featuring the artist’s most iconic views of the Sierra Nevadas, Yosemite Valley and New Mexico. FAC will present a lecture series with curator Marianne Lorenz to go with the visuals on July 12, 19 and 26, and August 2; register in advance online.
