Golden Oldies

When Michael Mason was younger, he and his friends used to cruise downtown Denver in their parents' cars. "When you're young, you want to get older, and when you're older, you want to have the same feelings as when you were younger," he says. As an engineer who lives in Golden and also happens to love hot rods, he came up with the idea in 2004 to organize the Golden Super Cruise on South Golden Road, which was a remote area compared to downtown. "I thought, 'Let's bring some business down there and give people a chance to drive their cars so other people can see them,'" he remembers. Mason and his friend and Cruise co-founder Don Hoefer expected about thirty or forty cars; they got eighty. The numbers doubled by the second cruise, and the Super Cruise has never seen fewer than 250 cars since, with the best nights drawing more than 700. It's a colorful taste of Americana, and now in its fourth year, spectators line the road with lawn chairs to take the trip back in time with the cruisers.

The cruise goes from 6 to 9 p.m. the first Saturday of every month, May through October. Find DJ Van Jeffries in his usual spot tonight, in front of the Pizza Hut. For information, call 303-968-7536 or visit
