Kings of the Hill

Brian Finn recommends arriving early today in Gold Hill, since the tiny mountain village’s fire department will host a pancake breakfast beginning at 8:30 a.m. The town parade, featuring fire trucks and children’s bikes, follows; it “usually has more viewers than participants,” Finn advises. But the main event is at Finn’s Gold Hill Inn, where the annual Fourth of July Twang Feast and Bar-B-Que features the sort of family-friendly music and stomach-satisfying food that’s been attracting folks to this old Boulder County mining town for at least thirty years.

This year’s outdoor party, which begins at noon and continues until 5 p.m., includes live music by three rootsy bands – Halden Wofford and the Hi-Beams, the Jeff and Vida Band, and Finders and Youngberg – and a grilled-chicken lunch with all the fixings on the Gold Hill Inn patio. “This is the perfect place to get out of the city and out of the heat, and with all the rain we’ve had, it’s so beautiful up here right now,” Finn teases.

Tempted? The price is $15 for music only and $12 for food (children’s tickets and food are half price); go to or call 303-443-6461.
