"We really just want to make it a party -- a big rich event," says promoter John Marquez. "I hope it eventually becomes a destination spot for winter movie watching." The party part of the equation is easy, with DJs, bands and drinks all helping promote the well-being of everyone around, the movie itself will always be lubricated with plenty of social interaction beforehand.
The series, which is in its second week, also has plenty of room to expand, "We plan on evolving it as needed," continues Marquez, "There will certainly be theme nights, costumes and things like that. And it's going to be a weekly event starting at the beginning of next year."
For now, it'll stick to the bi-weekly format, with Half Baked tonight followed by another venerable stoner classic, Dazed and Confused on November 30 (the series will be taking the week off for Thanksgiving). For its part, Half Baked should have no trouble providing the laughs to stoners and non-stoners alike. Well, maybe it'll have more luck with the stoners.
If you haven't seen it (or you simply can't remember it), Half Baked is all about three potheads trying to get their buddy out of jail after he accidently kills a police horse. With Dave Chappelle at the helm and Jim Breuer providing the very stoned sidekick antics, it's a buddy film as much as it is a comedy about weed. Plus, you'll get a few guest appearances from the likes of Jon Stewart, Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson and, of course, Tommy Chong. It's stupid, yes, but after a few drinks it'll likely be a riot to watch with other people.
The best part, however, is the price. At just $5 a ticket, you won't have much to lose. With the Oriental Theater's recent ceiling damage, it might serve as a nice reminder that the Oriental is still out there and a great place to sit and watch a movie.
