With the hustle and bustle of its shops and restaurants all lit up by holiday lights, Old South Pearl Street is a beautiful stretch to walk along any evening this time of year. But for holiday cheer that fairly oozes onto the street and sidewalks, Winterfest is the time to take that stroll. The mini-festival, now in its fifth or sixth year — “No one can ever seem to remember,” says event manager Nicole Jarman — is an old-world, family-friendly scene with horse and carriage rides, chestnuts, apple cider and Father Christmas himself. This year’s Winterfest begins tonight at 6 p.m. and runs until 9, alongside South Pearl’s monthly First Friday Artwalk.

Tomorrow, the street becomes an open-air market from noon to 5 p.m., with Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands and holiday gift baskets for sale. In the warming hut, you can sip on hot chocolate — or hot toddies — then line up for wine and whiskey tastings. At 4, the Williams Brothers Band will serenade ice sculptors as they work their magic.

Winterfest takes place on the 1400 and 1500 blocks of Old South Pearl Street. For information, go to www.oldsouthpearlstreet.com or call Jarman at 303-242-1032.
Fri., Dec. 5, 5-9 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 6, 12-8 p.m., 2008
