In keeping with its efforts at turning downtown Lakewood into some sort of Ray Bradbury-style urban Green Town, Belmar will now hold pie-baking contests. These fruit-pie showdowns are scheduled to run on the first Sunday of every month, in concert with the Market at Belmar, and will feature a different seasonal pie each go-round. Today is the inaugural competition and requires that contestants bake either a strawberry or rhubarb pie. July brings cherry, August peach (cobblers only, please), and in September, apples will be the chosen ingredient.
Interested? Of course you are, Betty Crocker! So here's how this works. Assemble and bake off your pie, then bring it to the chef demonstration tent on West Alaska Drive in Belmar at noon. There it will be poked at, tasted, sampled and judged by those passing through the market. The crowd favorite wins a blue ribbon (natch), a $20 gift certificate good among the vendors hawking their wares at the Market at Belmar, and bragging rights at the next quilting bee, church picnic or box social.
