"It's just an opportunity to get some stuff really cheap," says Kathleen Martindale, coordinator of the no-frills KGNU Book and Music Fair and Artists and Their Crafts show taking place today. "Short of us having the radio turned on, I think the entertainment lies in the little bit of chaos that goes on with the people who show up. We always have people who come really early and can't wait to get in."

Under a tent in the parking lot of the independent community radio station, the book-and-record sale — slightly abbreviated this year due to a lack of storage space — will go on, along with a display by station volunteers of their own arts and crafts, including jewelry, aprons, furniture and paper. "It's payback, to give them an opportunity to show their other talents," says Martindale.

The sale opens at 9 a.m. to KGNU members, 10 a.m. to everybody else, and runs until 4 p.m. at 4700 Walnut Street in Boulder. Proceeds benefit KGNU, the non-profit organization behind 88.5 FM in Boulder, 1390 AM in Denver and 93.7 in Nederland. For information, visit www.kgnu.org.
