Ruby Hill Rail Yard back in action as a winter playground, lack of winter notwithstanding
Denver hasn't had enough of a snow dump this winter for a proper sledding run, much less urban snowboarding jibs, but -- thanks to last week's temperature drop and a special agreement with Denver Water to facilitate artificial snowmaking -- the Ruby Hill Rail Yard ski and snowboard terrain park officially opened on Monday. The Rail Yard will be open daily during Ruby Hill Park hours -- starting at 5 a.m., with lighted night riding available until 9 p.m. -- from now until all the snow is gone.

"We're really excited to be involved in this project again to help introduce more young people to skiing and snowboarding and to provide a venue for learning some new tricks down in Denver," says Bob Holme, terrain park manager at Winter Park. The resort partners with Denver Parks and Recreation, Denver Water, Christy Sports, Jack in the Box and other sponsors to build the terrain park features at Ruby Hill Park, a favorite local sledding and tubing destination for as long as anybody can remember. "We were aiming to have the terrain park open by the end of January, and it finally got cold enough to blow some snow," Holme says.
Christy Sports will be providing free rental gear on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. And the locally-based crew behind the So-Gnar Snowboard Camp Tour will be hosting a free Mile High Shred Day snowboard camp session at the Ruby Hill Rail Yard on Tuesday, January 29, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring a So-Gnar team demo with Pat Milbery and other riders, as a teaser for the Snowboard Camp Tour stop at Winter Park February 2-3.
