A young boy stripped of his birthright by a cruel and avaricious uncle sets out to gain the magical powers that will allow him to reap vengeance. Armed with black magic, he returns and kills his uncle and his uncle's family. In a typical Hollywood film, the movie would end there, perhaps with the boy getting the girl and staring off into the sunset with steely-eyed but just resolve. But in the tale of Milarepa: Magician, Murderer, Saint, things are just getting started. Based on a famous tale of Tibet, Milarepa tells the story of Thopa Ga as he seeks and finds revenge — only to be filled with remorse. In seeking repentance, he finds enlightenment and becomes Milarepa, a revered Buddhist saint. Filmed on location at the Tibetan-Indian border with the aid of more than fifty Buddhist monks, Milarepa is a story with pronounced resonance today, when hunger for revenge seems to be driving the whole world into madness. The film opens tonight at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street in Boulder; doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the show starts at 8.
