Downtown Denver will be ground zero this afternoon if you’re looking for something fun, free and totally unexpected to do: From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., students from the University of Colorado Denver’s College of Arts & Media digital design program will put their learning to work for the two-hour Kinesthesia Festival — a showcase of interactive games and applications on the big LED screen downtown at 16th and Champa streets — courtesy of the Denver Theatre District, which donated the screen time. Class instructor Bryan Leister, whose own work has graced downtown LEDs under more formal arrangements in the past, praises his students, mostly sophomores, who were more than up for the challenge of creating material for the public eye.
“I think these kids are brave to jump into this, but they’re having a blast with it,” Leister says. “They learned some basic coding in class, but it’s a big leap to go from making a little code on a computer to making an iPad application that runs.” As an aside, he notes that he offered students his services as a technological “contractor” to help realize their visions, but says they “had to ask me for it in the right way.” In other words, they had to know what they were talking about — even if they weren’t yet fully equipped to bring their projects to fruition. During the program of ten-minute projects using iPads, Kinects, motion tracking and more, participants can interact with screen images in various brain-tickling ways.
