With the biggest lineup in its five-year history, the Cinema Q Film Festival, which opens tonight at the Sie FilmCenter, brings the stories of icons and everyday luminaries of the GLBTQ community to the forefront. Twenty documentary and narrative-film screenings will also connect directors, actors and film subjects with the audience via in-person appearances over the weekend.

I Am Divine -- which screens Saturday, July 20, at 9 p.m. – takes a look at the late actor Divine and his struggle to gain respect and garner work that went beyond his always engaging but often grotesque female-impersonation roles in John Waters films. "The documentary is very affectionate and very respectful, but it's not a whitewash," says Mink Stole, a fellow Waters star and friend, who will be making a stop in Denver.

The fest kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Sie, 2510 East Colfax Avenue, with the documentary Before You Know It. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director PJ Raval and several of the film's subjects. Tickets and festival-pass prices range from $11 to $65; for information, visit denverfilm.org or call 303-595-3456.
