Soiled Again

As winter holds on, spring gardening feels a season away. But those who grow plants from seed can get their hands dirty while it's still cold outside. Growing food from seed is cheaper, greener and more fun than simply sticking sprouted plants into the ground. It's also more challenging, as Denver's wonky weather and persnickety soil thwart many gardeners' well-plotted plans.

Today, experts from the GrowHaus, Denver Urban Gardens, WasteFarmers and other earthy organizations will demystify the process during the second annual Seed Swap and Garden Teach-In, which will feature dozens of varieties of locally sustainable seeds and hands-on workshops from some of Denver's top urban farmers. Seed Swap is a chance to share tips on what and when to plant, while also digging into the grow-local movement.

"Growing your own food is exciting, but it can also be pretty daunting," says Adam Brock, executive director of the GrowHaus. "We wanted to put together an event that would make it as easy as possible for folks to get started with a garden."

Seed Swap takes root today at the GrowHaus, 4751 York Street, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is a suggested donation of $7, or free for those bringing seeds to trade. Call 720-515-4751, or visit for more information.
