St. Pat’s on The Rocks

While Denver doesn’t dye its waters green in honor of St. Paddy’s Day, Denverites definitely celebrate in style, usually by pouring rivers of beer down their throats, dancing like lubed-up leprechauns in the streets and bedecking their body parts with shimmery shamrocks in a plea to get kissed. And while that’s all well and good, tonight, from 5 to 7 p.m., the staff at Scruffy Murphy’s Irish Pub, 2030 Larimer Street, is paying homage to the patron saint of Ireland by hosting a more civilized showdown that involves Bushmill Irish whiskeys and Scottish rare single malts.

“This is how we’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day — by offering a great selection of small batch and hard-to-find classic malts and whiskeys,” says Scruffy Murphy’s owner John Elliott, who adds that tonight’s Classic Malts Showdown “isn’t like sitting down with a shot of Jameson.” Instead, he says, it’s an educational experience, one in which sippers will be turned on to “nuanced tastings and different flavorings,” some of which, he insists, mimic cordials. The event, hosted by Robert Sickler, whom Elliott calls “one of the top whiskey experts in the United States,” costs $35 per person, and includes heavy passed appetizers, eight drams of malts and whiskeys and 10 percent off Scruffy’s entire whiskey menu for the duration of the night.
