Ten things to do for $10 this weekend, July 13-15, 2012

Since you're probably spending every extra dollar on the air- conditioning bill this month, it's hard to find money for fun stuff. Help is at hand, with this week's list of ten events you can participate in for under $10: art shows, meeting a punk legend, eating a pancake breakfast. So turn off the air-conditioning, get out of the house, and enjoy summer in Colorado. For a full roster of events, see the online Westword calendar.

Eleven-Year Retrospective at Space Gallery (Friday, free) There have been many, many artists who've displayed their work at Space Gallery over its eleven-year run, and they'll come together tonight at a benefit for the prolific art gallery. Every artist who's displayed work in the gallery was invited to create a twelve-by-twelve-inch panel of art to show and auction off tonight, and sixty responded. Come see the different styles that Space has hosted over the years, and bid on the pieces to raise money for the gallery's move to a new space.

Colorado Irish Festival at Clement Park (Friday-Sunday, free before 6 p.m. today) Culture straight from the Emerald Isle will land in Denver for this festival, which celebrates all things Irish. If you make it before 6 p.m. tonight, all of the pipe dancing, music and tournaments of Irish hurling are free! After 6 p.m., tickets start at $10, but that's a small price for what promises to be a lively extravaganza filled with vendors, art and Irish culture.

Artist Chat at Ice Cube Gallery (Saturday, free) Pick the brains of artists Jane McMahan and Regina V. Benson, who'll discuss the making of their installations Absence and Wading in, both closing this weekend. Not only is this your last chance to see some great work, but the official Artist Chat is also a way to get inside the artists's minds, to learn how they carried out their particular visions.

Night Drive at Beauty Bar (Saturday, free) There can never be too many dance parties in this town. Beauty Bar's new offering, Night Drive, will be a great place to let your hair down tonight. On decks will be James Miles of Double//Shadow and Snake Rattle Rattle Snake and Shannon von Kelly of Neon Nights, so it's sure to be a great, sweaty night full of people shaking it all out.

Alice Bag at Wax Trax Records (Saturday, free) Today offers a rare opportunity to see feminist punk activist Alice Bag in person. And not only can you experience the work of a legend, you can do so for free! Bag is known for her prolific music career as well as her autobiography Violence Girl, which she'll read from and sign at today's record-store show. With any luck, she may even play some music. Don't miss it.

CAVP Pancake Breakfast at Manual High School (Saturday, sliding scale starting at $5) Support the Colorado Anti-Violence Program by participating in a favorite Saturday morning pastime: eating pancakes. Tickets are on a sliding scale of $5 to 25, and that buys you pancakes (with vegan and gluten-free options) as well as celebrity servers, juice, coffee and the warm fuzzy feeling that comes from donating to a good cause, since all the money goes to helping to eliminate violence in the GLBTQ community.

Bike-In Movie: Kicking & Screaming at Civic Center Park (Sunday, free)

Kicking & Screaming

isn't the 1995 Noah Baumbach cult classic of the same title about post-college ennui, sadly. But hey, at least it's a free movie in the park. The Colorado Rapids are presenting this screening of the 2005 movie that has Will Ferrell coaching a kids' soccer team. Bike to Civic Center Park and enjoy the great outdoors until the credits roll.
