Red Bull's national cooler challenge stopped in Denver this week with a mission for twenty handpicked Denver artists: Each was presented with a Red Bull cooler covered in canvas and asked to turn it into a work of art.
The resulting works were reviewed by a panel of local gallerists, artists and celebrities, including Bobbi Walker of Walker Fine Art, Tom Horne of Black Book Gallery, Denver Nuggets shooting guard Randy Foye and photographer Mark Sink at a public reception at the McNichols Building on Wednesday night.

The panel selected two artists -- collagist Mario Zoots and street artist Jaime Molina -- for the grand prize: a trip to Art Basel Miami, where their work will be exhibited at SCOPE Miami.
"I was already planning on going to SCOPE, but now I have a definite reason to go," says Zoots, who represented Forest Room 5 (where the finished cooler will have a permanent home) in the competition. "This was such a great experience, and unique challenge for myself. As soon as I knew where my cooler was being placed, I couldn't wait to get started. I'm so happy my vision came through!"

Molina's cooler, which was etched and engraved with wood paneling, will end up at the Meadowlark, and he had this to say about the experience: "I wanted to keep my design natural and real. I feel that my installation is going to fit in really well with the vibe at the Meadowlark. It's very down to earth, so I wanted my cooler to reflect that as well."
The public also had a chance to vote; People's Choice awards went to Emily Dwan and Gamma Acosta, one of whom could join Zoots and Molina at SCOPE after a social-media showdown open to selected artists from the eight cities participating in the Red Bull Cooler Project.
