The play's definitely the thing in Denver this week, with the Denver Center Theatre Company hosting the Colorado 2008 New Play Summit, which starts today and runs through February 16. The trio of world-premiere productions that grew out of scripts commissioned by artistic director Kent Thompson last year will be staged during the Summit; Westword critic Juliet Wittman had a few quibbles with Octavio Solis's Lydia (see review) and Theresa Rebeck's Our House (reviewed January 24), but she raved about Plainsong, Eric Schmiedl's script based on Kent Haruf's novel (reviewed February 7). All three are worthy efforts, though, and rare examples of a theater company going out of its way to support new work. In addition to this trio of shows, the Summit will also feature four readings, a playwrights' slam, and dinners and receptions. Registration for the entire Summit is $175; tickets to individual productions may still be available. The action takes place at the Denver Performing Arts Complex; for more information, go to www.denvercenter.org.
