This Weekend in Stoke: How are those New Year's resolutions coming along?
Estes Park Winter Festival and Winter Trails Day
Get to steppin'! The 3rd annual Estes Park Winter Festival opens tonight with a free "Ceilidh" Irish barn dance and runs through Monday at the Fairgrounds at Stanley Park, with a CandyLand Ice Castle for kids and family-friendly events including ice skating, ice bowling, horse and carriage rides, a town-wide scavenger hunt, and the annual Chili Cook-Off, sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International (festival grounds open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., $5 per person). The main event is the 17th annual Winter Trails Day in Rocky Mountain National Park on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with free snowshoe demos on Saturday and free entrance to the park all weekend.
Roar! Melvin Williams is bringing his popular Lion's Pride Training boot camps to Delgado's Boxing and Martial Arts, 2333 Delgany Street, thanks to a new partnership with the gym, and the first taste is free: Come in on Saturday at 9 a.m. for a free session to get going on the New Year's resolution that's already sitting on the shelf, then get signed up for future sessions and additional training with Williams. "My athleticism has just skyrocketed since I've been training with Melvin and we want to make that kind of fitness training affordable and accessible to anyone," says PJ Shields, a skater with the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls' Dooms Daisies who has been training with Williams for the last year. "Some of the best prizefighters in the state have come out of Delgado's boxing, and opening the gym to the general public for these boot camps is allowing us mortals to train alongside the gods."
Biking in a winter wonderland! If that boot camp has you all warmed up, head to Summit County on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. for the Cloud City Wheelers' first annual Copper Mountain En Fuego Winter Bike Race on a 10-mile course across groomed Nordic ski trails, an ice rink, up some stairs, and over snow banks and hills around the mountain. Registration ($20) is from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Incline Bar and Grill at the base of the American Eagle lift. For more on the Wheelers' Winter Mountain Bike Race Series, visit www.CloudCityWheelers.com. The National Ski Areas Association's National Safety Awareness Week also starts on Saturday, and runs through January 22 with events at many local ski areas, including the Copper Mountain Safety Fest
Give it a whirl! If a heli-skiing trip is on your New Year's resolution list, don't miss the $50 heli drops to the Pyramid Zone at Silverton Mountain this weekend: We gave Silverton a nod for Best New Ski Terrain in our 2011 Best of Denver guide thanks to the 22,000 acres of skiable terrain that shiny red helicopter has opened up.
