USA Pro Cycling Challenge organizers revealed the winning design in a national poster competition yesterday, by Montrose-based artist Leanna Johnson, and this morning gave us a first look at the winning poster for the Denver Time Trial stage poster, the seventh and final stage of the second annual race, by Grand Junction-based artist Robb Reece.
"I think it's going to be a great opportunity for Montrose,and it's super-exciting to be part of the race and to get to see all the riders in person," says Johnson, who runs the Treeafeather Creative design studio in Montrose with her husband, Jordan. Montrose is one of four new host cities for this year's race, which will take place August 20-26. Stage 2 begins in Montrose on August 21 and ends in Crested Butte.
"For my poster design I just wanted to capture the intensity of the race and the intensity of the riders, and show what Colorado cycling is all about with the mountains as the backdrop," Johnson says. "This race has just had a tremendous impact on Colorado and the whole nation, and it's just getting started. I hope that Stage 2 will help show all that Montrose has to offer as a destination: We have great road and mountain bike routes in the Black Canyon and right near town, and it's just a great area for cycling. I'm hoping people will see that once they come here for the race, and want to come back again and again."
Reece, the artist behind the Denver stage poster, is a graphic designer and photographer -- and former pro cyclist -- and has been involved in efforts to bring a future stage of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge to Grand Junction.

"Cycling's in my blood, so to see this race start up in Colorado and to be a part of representing it to the world was the big thing that fired me up and inspired me to create this poster," Reece says. "Denver is going to be the time trial stage, and I think that's going to be the crux of the race: The time trial, many times, is where you win or lose it, so to have it as the last stage and have it coming into Denver, it's going to be a nail-biter. It's going to be huge for Denver, and having the finish downtown is going to be a huge draw. Spectator-wise, for the time trial, everybody's coming in individually, so you're going to get to see each of the riders come through, instead of a huge group coming in all at once, and you're going to really get to see that suspense build."
A portion of the proceeds from sales of the commemorative posters will benefit America's Road Home, a non-profit organization focused on ending family homelessness. Poster art for each of the stages is being revealed this week on the USA Pro Cycling Challenge Facebook page.
