All photos by Mauricio Rocha
Michelle McBride is a California native who's now the visual merchandiser for Claire's. This means she pays special attention to arranging all the visual elements in her life. We spotted her on the Millennium Bridge, wearing her favorite things: the color black, a scarf, loafers and a graphic printed cardigan. Continue reading to learn how she keeps her wardrobe fresh, her style icons, and even what's in her bag.
Name: Michelle McBride.
Spotted at: Denver's Millennium Bridge.
Profession: Visual merchandiser and ear-piercing specialist for Claire's.
Favorite film: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and Pretty Woman.
2013 jam: "Va Va Voom" by Nicki Minaj, and "Oblivion" by Grimes.
Style inspirations/ icons: I love the street urban wear from New York, and the fashion blog humansofnewyork. Since I've cut my hair recently, I love Audrey Hepburn because she is androgynous and feminine at the same time. Karl Lagerfeld has iconic style, and we both dress in black all the time.
Favorite accessory: Scarves, and in the summer it's shoes.
Favorite color: Black.
Style mantra: While I am putting my makeup on before I get dressed, I say to myself, "I am the body beautiful," like when Patrick Swayze gets dressed in To Wong Foo.
Shops at: Urban Outfitters, H&M, Buffalo Exchange,Crossroads, miscellaneous second-hand stores like Goodwill, ARC, the Salvation Army and Savers.
McBride's cardigan is made out of a gold, horse-printed fabric. "I usually like to dress in natural tones and keep it simple," she says. "I will rotate my clothes sometimes by selling old ones to Buffalo Exchange and buy new clothes in order to keep my wardrobe fresh."
"I usually wear loafers and 90 percent of the time I wear flats. My friends joke that I have a grandpa style," says McBride, who dresses in vintage-inspired pieces.
Check out what's in Michelle McBride's purse on page 2!
This is the black-and-brown accented tote bag that McBride carries with her. Let's take a peak inside, shall we?
Inside the purse is her passport; South of No North, a collection of short stories by Charles Bukowski; DKNY Be Delicious perfume, two tubes of lipstick; Sephora lotion and a Burberry eyewear case with tortoise-shell shades. There is also half of a compact that McBride received from her grandmother, a black Sharpie, keys with a skeleton key and a rubber toy panda from Claire's, an iPhone and a brown wallet.
Style analysis: McBride pulls from an eclectic mix of inspirations to craft her own look: the film To Wong Foo teaches her about self-confidence, while Audrey Hepburn's iconic cut and Karl Lagerfeld's black uniform resonate as well. She shops all over until she finds fashion that fits her vintage-grandpa-chic look.
Don't be afraid to draw inspiration from old Hollywood, European designers and even your own family, Denver.
