For some Denver families, the day after Thanksgiving means hitting the malls (or your local boutique) for holiday gifts and deals, or maybe catching a movie. But others head religiously to the Rocky Mountain Auto Show, a three-day, hot-metal extravaganza showcasing the cherriest hot rods, customized sports cars, detailed motorcycles and restored vehicles in the land, from the antique to the ultra-modern.

Racing into its sixteenth year, the expo opens today at the Colorado Convention Center, 700 14th Street in downtown Denver. According to spokeswoman Reggie Brasseaux, the biggest reason to see the show might be the vehicle that’s named the 2012 Crème de la Chrome there, not to mention the award itself: an eight-foot-tall engraved trophy that will travel to other shows across the nation. (The winner actually takes home a smaller replica trophy, a jacket and, by the way, a $5,000 prize.) "Another great feature is what's actually a live automotive art show, like a little art exhibit within the show itself," Brasseaux continues. As people tour the hall, they'll also get to see live pinstriping and other demonstrations. "It gives a real glimpse into all the time and effort and precision it takes to make these vehicles stand out," she notes.

Every dream car, it seems, requires a bit of elbow grease. Visit the Rocky Mountain Auto Show from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday; admission ranges from $5 to $15 (on Sunday only, children between the ages of six and twelve will be admitted free).
