Readers' Choice: Big Hoss Bar-B-Q
It has been said, often and loudly, that Denver has no great barbecue restaurants. And while this is true to a point, it's a point beyond which all arguments fall apart. Denver may not have the kind of historic barbecue joints that most folks think of when they think of great barbecue. But what we do have are many places that do one or two things very well, along with one place that does nearly everything better than anyone else — and that place is Big Hoss. At this new joint in northwest Denver, barbecue has been deconstructed to its socio-political roots and rebuilt, like Steve Austin, to be better than it was before. The pork shoulder is excellent, especially when dosed with a little of the vinegar sauce from the barbecued shrimp; the barbecued chicken smells like an Alabama house fire; and the ribs have just the right texture. And while most barbecue joints offer a half-dozen sauces, Big Hoss has only one, a fusion of the best elements of all the other sauces that — true to owner Hoss Orwat's claim — goes perfectly with just about everything on the menu.

Are you kidding me??

I read the reviews here and was prepared to head down with my camera just for giggles... order up some sweet teas and NOTHING else (Obviously... wouldn't even feel safe trying food)... and just sitting with my camera and watching all the OTHER poor fools who hadn't read reviews.

I went to the website noted above... and THIS is their meny listing!!http://www.bighossbarbq.com/Me...

Even with a magnifying glass, nobody could ever make out anything on that page!

How sad that this pig of a man has obviously connected in the right places to even be listed here!

Also, to the people who have been victim to his abuse and harassment and the drunkenness in the establishment... at the very least... shoot out an email to 9news or MyFox Colorado... I bet that Tom Martino guy would have a FIELD DAY with this mess of a place!

There is a lot of truth to the messages above. I've been to Hoss plenty of times, and perhaps on a third of those trips something was terribly wrong (overcooked ribs, lukewarm pork, cruddy service). In its defense, when the food is prepared right it IS excellent and far better to other joints in Denver (IMHO).

Is it worth rolling the dice? Maybe, maybe not. I'm hoping the owner will get a clue he needs to shape his place up ALL of the time.

Guys.....the BBQ was dry and as BBQ places go ranked pretty low. I am from the South originally and know BBQ...there are many in Denver that are better. I can only assume Hoss got on the internet and worked the system to his place ranked "best".

yeah, the manager's name is sherry and she and the owner are/have been romantically involved since the place opened about a year and a half ago. she is the only original employee left after hoss ran everyone else off, although she *has* been fired once. her excessive drinking behind the bar has led to more than one off-putting experience, just go into patrick carrols and ask one of the bartenders about the night she got tossed out of the big hoss grill after an embarrassing "too drunk" shift. the cops had to come. there was blood on the ground and everyone who was at the bar next door saw it go down.sherry is awesome and nice and really concerned with what is right. ha!

Swore this joke of a BBQ joint off a year ago after multiple bad meals (incinerated ribs and gristly ribeyes) paired with servers and bartenders who would pull disappearing acts. When the server would finally reappear, the bill would be completely wrong. The happy hour prices (1/2 off all appetizers and $1 off drafts) would not be reflected on the bill. More waiting.... Just a terrible experience overall.

A year goes by and we read a decent review in the Rocky Mountain News and Westword. A friend says it's better than it used to be. Against our better judgement, we decide to give it another chance. Want to support the local neighborhood establishments.

I called ahead to verify the happy hour specials. The response is that from 3:00-6:00 all appetizers are 1/2 off and the beer special is $1 off all drafts. Sounded good. We show up and ask the waitress what the happy hour was. Same answer. We order 2 lbs. of chicken wings ($14 normal but $7 at 1/2 off) and a liter each of LaBatts draft ($5 normal but $4 after the 1$ off). Service is fine. The wings were good this time. We get the check.

HERE WE GO AGAIN! The happy hour prices aren't reflected on the check. I tell the server that the bill will need to be fixed. She comes back and tells me that only draft pints are $1 off and that all appetizers but the wings are 1/2 off for happy hour. She says wings are 50 cents per wing for happy hour. 50 cent wings are not as good as 1/2 off ($3 more). I tell her that "all drafts" means "all drafts" and the same goes for 1/2 price apps. I say I even asked ahead of time. She says that she checked with the manager and these are the prices in the computer. Apparently I had walked into the Big Hoss bait and switch trap again and was going to get hosed for an extra $5.

After sitting in disbelief for a few minutes I decide that I'm going to make my stand. I go up to the bar to talk to the manager. I present my case and she says that the bill is correct. She tells me that "both items are still good deals though". I explain that the server (and the web site) needs to inform customers that that draft liters aren't included in "all drafts' and that wings are 50 cents verses the inclusive "1/2 off all apps" that Big Hoss is bait and switching. I also tell her that if only draft pints are $1 off, I would have bought two pints (which total a liter) for $2 each ($3 minus the $1 off for happy hour) instead of the $5 for the liter. Not sure if she understood this concept. She finally caved a little and agreed to take $4 off the ticket (I still got rooked for $1) and told me that I "have been informed now". I got a real warm fuzzy from the customer friendly manager and can't wait to go back to experience this all again...NOT!!!

We will never, never, ever go back here again. The food isn't good enough to experience The Spanish Inquisition again. Too many other good choices in NW Denver.

My b/f and I went there after Mr.Sheehan's review,we were not impressed.Everything was just mediocre. It's a bummer when you read the hype then go home dissapointed.I know when things don't go well the first time you should always return but we don't have the money to take those chances again and again.

Horrible food, bad service. The first time we went our steaks were overcooked. The second time our food took almost an hour and the pork was overcooked and dry, had to smother in sauce to give it any flavor. Will not give it a third try.

have been to this place numerous times since they opened - mainly because it was one of the few place in the neighborhood. The last time we were there - we sat at the bar - and the service - by the bar manager was terrible. We sent back an item that wasn't edible in our opinion and we were given a dirty look and it was still on our bill at the end of the night. The service was extremely slow - it was during the week -and not busy - and we had to hunt down the bar manager to pay the bill - who was drinking with the customers. It is sad that this has come to this and every time we come to this place - new staff. Now I know why. We won't be back - too many other choices that appreciate our business and treat us right. Sorry - but the sauce is good.

We stopped by Hoss's after reading it won Best of Denver (and I love pork). The waitress was nice enough and told us we landed during happy hour and all apps are 1/2 off. Woo-Hoo! We can sample and not spend too much (as we didn't have too much to spend anywho). All the apps were okay - we were thankful the fried pickles were only 1/2 price, the BBQ nachos fun and the pork niblets in the vinegar sauce the most outstanding item order. We loved that one. But after a reasonably enjoyable snack, deciding we would revisit to eat the pork, our nightmare began. Our waitress returned telling us she had made a mistake, apps aren't 1/2 off on Saturday, grinning at us sheepishly. Well, that's your mistake we said, we expect to pay the price quoted. She agreed, and disappeared. And we waited, and we waited, and we waited. Finally, I got up to use the bathroom. When I returned, still no check. My husband got up to use the bathroom. At this point the female bartender approached me (did she think I would be the easier target? Not.) She stated that apps were not 1/2 price. I said, sorry, but I'm not paying full price. If I had known that, we would not have ordered what we ordered. She seemed pissed, and tried to guilt trip me. This was sucking. I said I would only pay what we were told. She disappeared. My husband returned. And we waited, And waited, and waited. Finally, sheepish waitress returns with our bill and the discounted apps. She said she was sorry for the hassle. I believe her. I'm sorry she works at such a shitty customer service restaurant. She should find a new place to work. As for the award winning BBQ red sauce? Buy Stubb's at your local grocer instead.

I have been here twice - once with friends, and once after I read the review (in hopes that it would be better than the first time). Both times, my food has been cold. Both times, there weren't many people in there - so not that there is ever an excuse for cold food that is supposed to be hot, but you get my point. The sauce is good, yes, but I could eat room temperature sauce out of a bottle at home and it would still be better than what I ate at this place...

I've been to Hoss numerous times because it's in my hood, choices in our hood are limited, and it's got a nice big window to the street that's nice to look out. Yes, the sauce is good, but that's about it. The food is mediocre at best. The sides and the salad bar are pathetic. The waitresses seem nice, but definitely clueless. There are no guys working there, and that seems to make sense now. Hoss is an a_ _ - doesn't even know enough to greet a customer or even nod as he passes our table. On more than one occasion, we've ordered a drink a few minutes before the end of happy hour, but it came up full price on the bill. When we protested, we got a big stink about it from the server (probably because they are afraid of Hoss) so we just let it go. The atmosphere and acoustic sucks - cold and generic and always seems loud even when there's nobody in there, and not loud in the fun kind of way. I really have never liked giving Hoss money, and now reading a few of the comments, I think I've decided I won't give them anymore oif our money in the future. - we're not THAT desperate. Anyone who says this place is great has very low standards.

I haven't eaten at this place; my favorite place is Jabo's in Englewood which never gets mentioned here. Good food, great sauces, the owner is always out talking to people - and don't forget the scone!

I don't care about the service issues as much as the "Q" itself. This is "NOT" the best BBQ in Denver. They may have won a "Best Sauce" prize but sauce isn't BBQ, it's a condiment, embellishment. Q is about low and slow and the flavor of the burning of select woods infused into the meat. Having the Reader's Choice selection too is more often then not a confirmation of the stupidity of the selection. They may as well have given it to Brother's BBQ which was last year's Reader's Choice BBQ winner. The editor's have gotten it right a few times (ie M&D's, Cabin Creek) but I'm giving up on Westweird's Worst of Denver as of '08.

I'm just saying, the food is okay; there's better bbq out there. Here's something to do for fun- order a steak at Big Hoss, then return it to the kitchen because it is not cooked to your liking, then listen to Hoss yell about you to the entire restaurant about how stupid you are for returning a steak to *his* kitchen. He once made the manager tell a guy "you're cutting your steak wrong". Go to Meade Street and ask Drew about it; funny stuff.I'm not disgruntled, just honest. Yelp.com has a few interesting reviews of Big Hoss and written concerns about this mess of a "best of" category. Don't take *my* word for it.

Been to Big Hoss BBQ at least a dozen times. Never Had Bad service. The food is awesome. Especially fried green tomatoes and the Buffalo Ribs. People that posted negative comments about this place are insane.

A BBQ conspiracy? Are you kidding? Disgruntled ex employees can't change the fact that Hoss's has good food. Obviously Westword thinks so. So do it's readers. So does 5280 who named it a best bet. So did the KC Masterpiece BBQ judges that picked Hoss's as the best sauce in the state. The service was terrible? I've eaten there a couple dozen times and never experienced the bad service or the attitude mike describes. Maybe Chris waited on him.

The food is excellent. It's the reason Hoss's keeps getting great reviews and winning awards. In the words of Jim Rome: Scoreboard.

I'm a former employee of this trainwreck of a place. It is true, Hoss likes to booze it up and yell and scream at his employees during service and his food is mediocre at best, after all he uses charcoal instead of wood. If you go in, ask to see the pit- then take note how filthy the kitchen is. This is what you're eating. Service is consistently awful because the guy runs off all of his employees that don't laugh at all his racist, sexist jokes. I've had my doubts about "best of" before, but with this vote, now I know it's a sham. Eff Big Hoss BBQ.

I did notice that the readers picked it as well, which I do agree is due to the "hip" folks in the Berkely neighborhood. I was more referring to how Big Hoss won awards in three categories this year. Some of the other multiple category winners are Elway's, Oceanaire, and Izakaya Den, and Big Hoss is by no means in the same ball park with these restaurants. The Westword even invented a category this year, Best Irish BBQ that went to Cabin Creek, which is a previous Best BBQ winner, and reflects my earlier point that somebody has made it their mission to hype-up Big Hoss.

Eric

Hey Mike, I can understand your argument about there being plenty of places to get good BBQ (Yazoo being my favorite) and I appreciate the heads up about the service at this place. But your argument about voting falls flat. This is a category where the editorial and reader's choice happened to be the same--most likely because those folks in the Berkely neighborhood tend to trumpet any new decent place to death. You will notice there are plenty of cases where that is not the case.

Lindsey

Agreed, mike. This places is awful, simply do to the atmosphere and an angry, drunken owner. I wouldn't go here if you paid me. Go to Brickyard just down the street for great service AND good food.

I know it gets said every year by the readers, "why do we, the readers, even vote for our favorites when Jason Sheehan and the editors just picks their favorites and make them the 'Best'". But this time it goes a bit too far, seriously, has Sheehan made it his personal mission to try to make Big Hoss into this magical BBQ restaurant where everything is perfect? A new and somewhat unique BBQ restaurant maybe, but there are PLENTY of good BBQ places in Denver and he knows it. The food is pretty good. The service has been terrible everytime I've been there; some wierd combination of neglect, complete indifference and arrogance, like they're allowing you to eat there and you should just be happy you're allowed in the club. I wish the restaurant all the success in the world, but after five bad visits, I won't be eating there anymore and the thing is, they probably don't care.
