Denver has always had a shortage of good late-night restaurants. Most places in town lock the doors around nine or ten and leave the late-night service to the drive-thrus, bars, diners and street-corner burrito vendors. So before the clock strikes eleven, head to Izakaya Den, which has a great menu for late-night snackers: a combination Italian/Mexican/French/American/Japanese board that offers both the lowbrow and the high-tone side by side.

Closing at 10PM is "late night"? The review incorrectly implies they're open 'till 11.

On the strength of having won Westword's 2009 Best of Denver "Best Late-Night Menu", I convinced my colleagues on a recent business trip that we would have no problem finding something interesting to eat after our plane landed at DIA at 8:30pm on May 20th, a Wednesday night. We grabbed a rental car and breezed down to South Pearl Street, arriving just before 10:00pm. Alas, the supposedly best late night place to eat in Denver was already closing up. While I wasn't expecting the 24/7 atmosphere of Manhattan, it's pretty sad when a town that proclaims itself a modern American city all but shuts down an hour and forty five minutes past sunset. I've always argued with folks who claimed that Denver was nothing more than Kansas City at 5000 feet but after this experience, it looks like they knew something I didn't.

So 11 counts as late night? The place is good, but its pricey and the plates are un-deniably small.
