A Long Time Coming
The beleaguered Shadow Theatre Company will attempt to make a fresh start at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center tonight, kicking off its season with The Final Mile to Providence, an ambitious original work written and directed by production manager Arnold King. A drama about a family torn apart after the death of its matriarch and all that ensues, the play will be performed as three parts in repertory (a full, contiguous performance will be staged on October 30). And though it sounds like a dark premise, King calls it a dramedy, with ample room for comedy to temper the sturm and drang.
The play is also a coming-out of sorts for King, who says the work has been a decade in the making. When I set out to write it ten years ago, I was primarily burgeoning as a theater artist in general, learning about acting, stage managing and lighting design, he explains. I wondered what else I could do, and I thought maybe Id try to write a play. So I sat down to write a one-act, and it ballooned from there. I found out that I enjoyed the writing process, and then I found myself adding more to the play as my theatrical understanding evolved. Its been interesting to see it finally coming to fruition.
See the first part of The Final Mile to Providence tonight at 7 at Su Teatro, 721 Santa Fe Drive; part two shows tomorrow and part three on Saturday, with the same rotation being repeated each weekend through November 5. Tickets are $20 at the door, or take advantage of a two-for-one advance ticket price. For reservations, go to www.shadowtheatre.com, or call 720-857-8000 for details.
