A Monster of a Show

It wasn’t easy, but I’m finally getting used to the idea of Broadway musicals based on comic movies. And vice versa, for that matter, but that’s another tale to tell. There was Hairspray. And The Producers and Spamalot and, lately, hysterical visions of Nathan Lane as Gomez Addams dancing in my head. So I guess I’m over the hump, or maybe looking forward to the hump, at least enough to pin my hopes for a night of solid musical comedy in Young Frankenstein, the adaptation of Mel Brooks’s horror-flick satire, a film that once made me laugh so hard that I could only hiccup “yes” or “no” for days afterward.

Stopping in Denver as part of the show’s first national tour, Young Frankenstein – boasting a book, music and lyrics by Brooks (with book co-writer Thomas Meehan) – opens with an 8 p.m. show tonight at the Buell Theatre, Denver Performing Arts Center, and continues daily except Mondays through June 27. Original cast member Roger Bart stars as Dr. Frankenstein himself, along with Broadway co-star Cory English as Igor.

For tickets, $15 to $125, go to or call 303-893-4100.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 8 p.m.; Thursdays, Saturdays, 2 & 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 & 7:30 p.m. Starts: June 15. Continues through June 27, 2010
