A Rare Pair
“I like the idea of branching out and pairing artists. I wanted to see what kind of conversation could be created,” says Ariella Ruth, events coordinator at Counterpath Press. And there should be plenty of conversation at Counterpath tonight, when local poet Eric Baus and international performance artist Rachelle Beaudoin share their work inside the intimate confines of the bookstore/publishing house/performance venue.
While chapbook editor Baus will read selections of various poems he’s been working on over the past year, Beaudoin will offer her subversive, humorous and thought-provoking take on women’s identity in popular culture through video, performance and wearable art. She’ll address the commercialization of sex and sexuality through literal translations of advertising-based cultural phenomena in pieces like “Locker Room Tease” and “Booty Pop,” which involve a ritual layering of clothing and temporary modifications to her body using padded underwear and bras.
Tonight’s performances begin at 7:30 p.m. at Counterpath, 613 22nd Street; the event is free. For more information, visit www.counterpathpress.org.
