A River Runs Through It

When the first kayakers put in today at 4 p.m. for the Pro Freestyle prelims at the Lyons Outdoor Games, they’ll be paddling like crazy. “This year we had the biggest snowpack we’ve seen in as long as I can remember, well over 200 percent of average, and it’s just starting to heat up,” says event organizer Marty Cronin. “To say that things are going to be enormous this year is definitely an understatement. We’re going to have one hell of a whitewater year and a very big weekend.”

The Outdoor Games’ spot on the whitewater calendar in between last week’s Teva Mountain Games in Vail and next week’s FIBArk Whitewater Festival in Salida has helped attract some of the sport’s top athletes, and this weekend, they’ll compete in events including the Adam Barron Memorial South Saint Vrain Creek Race on Saturday at 10 a.m. and the Kayak Pro Freestyle finals on Sunday at noon. Other LOG events include live music in Sandstone Park and at Oskar Blues Brewery, the Dash & Bash 5K, a Cruiser Fun Ride, Bike Pump Track and Dirt Jump competitions, the Canine Cannonball and other dog sports, plus free demos and intro skills clinics for kayaks, paddleboards, bikes and fly fishing.

The Games continue through Sunday; admission is free for spectators. Registration for individual events ranges from $10 to $30 at, where you can also find more information.
