A White Album Christmas

Other than Christmas carols, there is probably no other collection of music that inspires an infectious sing-along more quickly than the Beatles catalogue. Hence the fourteen-year success of the John Lennon/Beatles Memorial Sing-along Celebration, an anniversary remembrance of the death of John Lennon and a tribute to the twentieth century’s most beloved rock band.

“It seems like kind of a kickstarter for the holiday spirit, regardless of how people celebrate them,” says Jimi Bernath of the event, which facilitates a group sing-along to all of the best Lennon/McCartney tracks (as well as a few solo selections). “This is the ultimate in trans-generational music, not just for the divine melodies, but for the innocence and romance of the early stuff and the more sophisticated and often mysterious lyrics of their later albums.”

Bernath says they always sing “the later, more serious songs,” like “Eleanor Rigby,” “Let It Be,” “In My Life” and, of course, “Imagine.” But everyone loves the early stuff, too, like “Eight Days a Week,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Please Please Me” and “I Saw Her Standing There.” “We always close the program with ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over),’” he adds.

The musical celebration begins at 2 p.m. today at the Mercury Cafe, 2199 California Street; admission is free. For more information, call 303-294-9281.
