It takes near-superhuman skills to pull together a group show of works by more than 25 local, national and international artists in a space as small as Plus Gallery. But that’s not why Plus maven Ivar Zeile calls the gallery’s summer portrait exhibition Super Human. The nitty-gritty of the show isn’t just portraiture; it’s also an exploration of how contemporary art expands on the idea of a portrait through new mediums and reimagined old ones.
“I think it’s the most ambitious group exhibit I’ve done here to date,” says Zeile, who enlisted the help of two great interns to pull it off. “It’s not easy to corral this many artists at one time in a gallery at all.” And just because it’s a portrait show, don’t expect to only see a bunch of flat paintings. Works include an anchoring sculpture by Boulder artist Roger Reutimann, as well as prints and images derived from video.
