In past years, Snowboard on the Rocks kicked off the carving season with snow-sports film premieres and music at Red Rocks. This year’s Snowboard on the Block will re-package the concept and bring it down to the party-ready EXDO Event Center in RiNo. And though the surroundings won’t be as spectacular, the overall impact will blow revelers away, promises Adam Schmidt, who founded both the event and its sponsor, Snowboard Colorado magazine. More than twenty premieres on a giant high-def LED screen and as many bands providing live music will all be part of the mix — not to mention some of the world’s top riders sliding down a real snowdrift in the middle of the street.
“Last year we had a series of snowboard premieres every week, and people were coming down from the mountains — Aspen, Breckenridge, all those places — to see them,” Schmidt notes. “This way, everybody can just make one trip down from the mountain. One of the challenges was coordinating the films and having all them ready on the same date. But everybody on board worked together and saw the need for getting them out early.” That said, Schmidt says his greatest challenge was “finding some snow,” as well as pulling out the stops without holding back when it comes to infrastructure. “We just wanted to really kick the board season off with a bang, with an event where everybody can have an awesome time and get amped for the season.”
Snowboard on the Block will spread out over three city blocks in the vicinity of EXDO, 1399 35th Street, from noon to 10 p.m., with a sideshow of gear vendors, skate demos, a snowboard photo exhibit, and food and drink; for tickets, $15 in advance (or $50 VIP), visit blockfestival.com. Admission goes up to $25 at the door.
Sat., Sept. 14, 12-10 p.m., 2013
