In anticipation of a sold-out March 10 appearance by cult filmmaker John Waters at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, the school and the Denver Film Society have teamed up to bring fans a special screening of the 1998 Waters comedy Pecker, which tells the story of a rising white-trash photographer from Baltimore (Ed Furlong) who falls headlong into the New York art scene. To Pecker's credit, film society programmer Keith Garcia thinks it's a good choice, given the art-school venue.

"Pecker makes fun of the serious world of art students and art culture," he says. "And it even has cameos from actual people in the art world, including Cindy Sherman. I like the idea that RMCAD is bringing this film to its students. It shows that they're not afraid to poke fun at the seriousness of art education; they know it's okay to have a good time." Said good time can be had tonight at the 7 p.m. screening in RMCAD's Mary Harris Auditorium, 1600 Pierce Street in Lakewood; admission is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. If you lost out in the mad rush for lecture tickets, which disappeared almost immediately, at least there's still this.

And back at the ranch (aka the Denver FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Avenue), the DFS will keep the John Waters spirit rolling by presenting screenings of his campy comedy Cry-Baby, starring Johnny Depp (with cameos by Troy Donahue, Joey Heatherton and Patty Hearst), tomorrow and Saturday night at 10 p.m. as part of the late-night Watching Hour series. For information or tickets, $5 to $7, go to http://www.denverfilm.org or call 303-595-3456.
