Michael Burnett, founder of Santa Fe Drive stalwart Space Gallery, completely missed celebrating the venue’s tenth anniversary last year. “We reached a significant milestone — not many galleries hang around for that long,” he says, and yet that milestone came and went without a party. But the upcoming eleventh anniversary?
“Eleven years will be a great way to celebrate,” Burnett explains. “It’s quirky, and it fits in with the genre stuff. And it’s a good way to announce future plans, too, as we move from one stage into a whole new chapter.” He’s referring to the gallery’s eventual move to a new space breaking ground down the street, at Fourth Avenue and Santa Fe, which he’ll officially announce at tonight’s opening of Eleven Year Retrospective. For this show, Burnett invited every artist who’s shown at Space over its eleven-year run to turn a twelve-by-twelve-inch panel into an artwork that will be offered in a Dutch auction, one for which bidders can make an offer — within certain guidelines — on the spot. Burnett estimates that about sixty artists will be featured in the building-fund benefit.
The reception begins at 5 p.m. with a private preview (admission is $20, or $30 for a couple); from 7 to 10 p.m., the public is invited to join the fun for free. The show will remain on view — and the bidding will continue — through July 27. Space Gallery is at 765 Santa Fe Drive; visit www.spacegallery.org or call 720-904-1088.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: July 13. Continues through July 27, 2012
