Catch a Fever
If you look back at hot pants, pet rocks, M*A*S*H* and roller-skating as souvenirs of the good ol' days, it's time to dust off that white leisure suit and slap on those platform boots, because Polly Esther's is calling all vintage hipsters -- along with younger club-goers -- to get their groove on at a Saturday Night Fever Tribute Weekend.
To celebrate the arrival of the hit Broadway musical Saturday Night Fever at Denver's Temple Buell Theatre, the LoDo nightclub is teaming up with www.allaboutdenver.com, a local lifestyles Web site, and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts to sponsor the theme weekend. "Saturday Night Fever always draws a really diverse crowd. A lot of people come out specifically to relive their disco days," says DCPA spokeswoman Jenny Schiavone. "It's a really physical show -- the dancing is just phenomenal. So why not head over to Polly Esther's to do some of your own dancing afterward?"
While a DJ plays such hits as the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever" and "Jive Talkin," from the 1977 smash movie, a mirrored disco ball will spin above the dance floor, uncapping a dormant disco extravaganza. Seventies trivia contests will be held both nights for prizes including disco-ball necklaces, tickets to the musical and artifacts from the past. But the big kahuna of prizes must be earned the hard way: by gyrating and boogying your way into the crowd's heart at the Disco Dance Contest, which starts at 11 p.m. on Saturday night. One cat with super smooth moves will win a night on the town complete with limousine ride, two tickets to the show and a private dance lesson with the musical's two main characters.
"You would be amazed by the clothes and styles we see in here on a weekly basis -- a lot of polyester, leisure suits and huge Afros, of course," observes Kristin Erickson, Polly Esther's general manager. "But this weekend should be even more over the top."
