Clarinet in Hand
Conductor Carl Topilow is the bicycle of the symphony world. Hes wagged his wand on stages from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Owensboro, Kentucky. Hes been known to tease horns up and blow woodwinds down. Hes banged big brass and hes brassy to big bass. Hes as comfortable straddling old classic composers as he is getting down and digging into contemporary pop icons. Above all else, Carl Topilow doesnt take no for an answer, especially when hes behind his flaming red clarinet.
Catch Topilow tonight at the helm of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra for the final concert of its summer series. Enjoy a light mix of classics like Mendelssohns A Midsummer Nights Dream and the Anvil Chorus from Verdis Il Trovatore. But dont give up when your knuckles are white from gripping the armrests. Hang in there for selections from Porgy and Bess, with Topilow popping it off with that famous clarinet.
Itll be the lemon in your iced tea this Sunday evening. The show begins at 6:30 p.m. at Boettcher Concert Hall in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; tickets start at just $12.50. For details, go to www.coloradosymphony.org or call 303-623-7876.
