Coffeehouse Talk

Is it any surprise that City Auditor Dennis Gallagher, who holds office hours at Common Grounds and has a brew named after him there, would single out coffeehouses as the key to civic engagement? He sees their rising numbers as a demonstration of the human connection and how people choose to communicate nowadays.

Tonight at 7:30 p.m., Gallagher will lecture on "Coffeehouses, Civics and the Craving for Human Interaction" at the forum inside the Community College of Aurora's Fine Arts Building, 16000 East CentreTech Parkway. The free talk, on how to increase and enhance opportunities for meaningful and effective public involvement, is part of the City of Aurora's Library, Recreation and Cultural Services' Power of One program.

"The Power of One is a year-long series of community events that are designed to bring people together to share a cultural experience and exchange ideas, get involved in conversations and connect with each other," says department spokeswoman Julie Patterson. The program has included book discussions and film viewings, and is now in the midst of a lecture series. This fall, it concludes with the Power of One Monumental Moment: three panel discussions addressing three monumental moments in history.

With Gallagher's decades in state and city government, as well as his community role in hosting historic walking tours, his lecture will have the power to engage. Register at 303-739-6617 or e-mail For more information, visit
