Crema the Crop

If you love good coffee, you know that it is an art form: Its origins and the quality of preparation are what separate a bitter cuppa diner joe from a perfect espresso topped by a smooth, airy layer of foamy crema. Ah. And there’s no better place to learn more about the artists of coffee than at today’s Novo Barista Jam, a casual professional coffee klatch at the Novo Roasting Facility, 3008 Larimer Street.

“It’s not exactly an official competition,” says Novo Coffee entrepreneur Jake Brodsky. “It’s more of a place for baristas to get together and socialize and get excited about coffee and improving the quality of coffee culture in Denver and Boulder.” And though Brodsky thinks the Front Range lags behind such traditional quality coffee markets as San Francisco and Seattle in terms of sheer numbers, he believes the culture is on the upswing here.

Give it a nudge: Drop by Novo for tours, beer provided by Great Divide, eats by the Gastro Cart, free coffee tasting, streamed coverage from the World Barista Finals in London, and a latte art competition featuring some of the town’s top baristas from 3 to 6 p.m. “Come and see what the local coffee community is about,” Brodsky says.
