Denver in Verse
Ken Arkind — American National Poetry Slam champion, poetry teacher and executive director of Colorado’s Minor Disturbance youth slam team — is a man who speaks for his city. Tonight he celebrates the release of Coyotes, a book of poems that he describes as a “rough” collection of work centered around his feelings about Denver’s growing pains.
“The whole thing kind of concentrates on being a punk-rock kid growing up in Denver. A lot of the poems are about mischief and mistakes and a bit of madness,” says Arkind of the release, which is his first for New York-based Penmanship Books. Tonight’s gathering will feature Arkind executing his work live alongside a diverse cast of local and national performers, including Lady Speech, National Poetry Slam champion Katie Wirsing, World Poetry Slam champion Rudy Francisco, Brian Polk, Westword contributor Josiah Hesse, and Cop Circles.
Doors for the Coyotes release party open at 8 p.m. at Deer Pile, 206 East 13th Avenue. This event is all ages and donations for the artists will be accepted at the door. For more information, visit penmanshipbooks.com.
