Do the Dew
After years of following the skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross events of the Summer Dew Tour the most-watched and best-attended action-sport competition in the world Breckenridge freeskier Colby West is psyched to compete in the first-ever Winter Dew Tour. Circuits come and go, and this one I have high hopes for, because Ive seen the Summer Dew Tour as a big success, West says.
The new event will bring the worlds best snowboard and freeskiing athletes to Breckenridge today to kick off a three-stop tour in which theyll compete for the Dew Cup and $1.5 million in prize money. Shaun White, whos skateboarded in the summer tour, will be the first crossover athlete, competing in snowboarding. Unlike the summer tour, the winter version includes events for women as well as men (dont miss Aspens Gretchen Bleiler on the Superpipe).
Today you can catch Superpipe qualifiers and slopestyle prelims from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Then tomorrow, its a full day of Superpipe and slopestyle competition before the party really begins with a free All-American Rejects and 3OH!3 concert in the Riverwalk Amphitheatre at 7. The action continues through Sunday. A Festival Village will be set up in the Riverwalk area throughout the weekend with autograph-signing booths, giveaways and interactive games.
West says the best vantage point for spectators is where hell be when hes not competing: standing on the edge of the pipe itself. Theres nothing like seeing the half-pipe firsthand, he says. You can see just how high everyone is going, see stuff thats never been done before. People that dont even ski really should see it, because its amazing.
