Drawn to It
If you’re looking for a new place to go on First Friday, consider Wazee Union, where local artist and comic-book creator Daniel Crosier is starting the new year with Off Panel, a show featuring the work of more than two dozen Colorado-based comics creators. “The popularity [of comics] crosses so much of our media these days, including movies and video games, but it’s still sort of looked down on as the redheaded stepchild,” says Crosier. Off Panel is a way to highlight the medium and, he adds, is “something different to kick off 2014 than the usual stuffy gallery shows.”
And these comics artists are focused on more than just men in tights saving the world. Their work runs the spectrum, from biographical tales by Westword contributor Noah Van Sciver to Crosier’s own monster-filled nightmares. You can also get your fine-art fix from any of the studio’s resident artists whose work is on display; hone your own skills in the life-drawing sessions featuring local burlesque girls (fully clothed, since this is a family event); or just watch the cosplayers and enjoy the food trucks outside.
The show starts at 7 p.m. at Wazee Union, 3501 Wazee Street; admission is free. For more information, visit tiny.cc/offpanel.
Fri., Jan. 3, 7-11 p.m., 2014
