Dress to Impress
Things are bound to get haute tonight at the Denver Art Museum's annual Design After Dark bash. "Bespoke" will be the theme of the stylish party, which is put on by the DAM's Design Council; the word describes a men's fashion counterpart to haute couture. The concept of tailored, custom-made clothing was picked as a theme partially as a tie-in to the upcoming Yves Saint Laurent exhibition that the DAM will host in March.
"In some ways, 'bespoke' was a sort of one-of-a-kind piece, and we thought this was really interesting because of Yves Saint Laurent's use of men's fashion," explains curator Darrin Alfred. "But it also ties back to the signature component of Design After Dark each year, which is the thirty-some objects that young, emerging and established architects create that are auctioned off at the end of the night."
The artists were given the words "cut," "stitch" and "pattern" as inspiration to create pieces that will be displayed on pedestals throughout the evening and sold to benefit the DAM's Department of Architecture, Design & Graphics. Alfred says the event attracts a "design-savvy, fashion-aware kind of crowd," who will also enjoy music from DJ James Holden, food from Gourmet Fine Catering and an open bar.
