Paul Weiss knows a thing or two about community-boosting. The mastermind behind the City Park Festival of the Arts (canceled this year due to a timing conflict, but in the works again for next year) and co-director of the popular Uptown Sampler restaurant crawl, Weiss likes to create the kind of ambience that encourages people to talk to one another and he's very good at it. In anticipation of this coming weekend's Colorado Colfax Marathon, the very event that forced him to postpone the 2006 fest, he and partner Carla Madison decided to nurture a little community spirit along the eastern corridor of the fabled avenue by organizing tonight's Feast on the Fax to showcase some of its best restaurants.
"It's already exceeded my expectations, and I'm a pretty optimistic fellow," Weiss says of the inaugural effort, which will offer food-sampling and drink specials from 5 to 8 p.m. at more than fifteen participating eateries, from the high-end Solera, Cork House and Mataam Fez to the homier confines of Axum, Joe's West of Memphis BBQ and Aguascalientes. Free bus transportation will be provided for ticket holders; Weiss calls the $20 price tag for this hopping evening one of the best values in the city.
