Erica Sodos displays her Power
Most stage magicians bank on flash and misdirection. But Boulders Erica Sodos has a passion for the art that runs far deeper. Weaving together wonder, mysticism and the almost mythic stature of magicians both modern and ancient, Sodos will bring her new show, The Power of Magic, to the b.side Lounge at 7 p.m. tonight (its part of her recently established monthly run at the popular Boulder nightclub). Everything from Chinese linking rings to mind-reading will be on display, and the audience may be pleasantly surprised by the strong yet subtle themes of feminism and theatricality that run through Sodoss show, which also includes an appearance by the Hindu goddess Lakshmi (one of Sodoss many dramatis personae). While theres sure to be no shortage of sheer spectacle in Power, its Sodoss respect for the intelligence of her crowds and the soul of her craft that will keep her from disappearing anytime soon. The b.side is located at 2017 13th Street in Boulder; admission is $8. For more information, call 303-473-9463 or visit blog.thebsidelounge.com.
