Feels Like the First Time

Ski resorts are grooming their runs and revving their chairlifts. Boarders are waxing their rides and testing their boots and bindings. It's official: The season of sliding down mountain slopes and catching mad air has returned.

But believe it or not, there are people who live in Colorado and have never stepped onto a snowboard. (And we're not talking about those remaining die-hard skiers.) Think about it: When's the last time you saw lots of Latinos shredding up the slopes? Maybe you just haven't been paying attention. But Copper Mountain, Burton, Sports Authority and Equipo Roca have, and they saw the need for an event like today's El Primero Descent, an opportunity for first-time riders to learn the tricks of the trade from bilingual instructors. For $50, participants get transportation to Copper, a lift ticket, rental equipment and a lesson. Visit for information or to register (the deadline was Thursday, December 7). Meet at the Sports Authority at 370 South Colorado Boulevard at 6:30 a.m. to catch your ride.
